Retirement provision and investment
ÍøÆØ³Ô¹Ï supports Switzerland’s well-established three-pillar pension system. The state pension (AHV/AVS), occupational pensions and private pensions fulfil different but complementary roles. ÍøÆØ³Ô¹Ï focuses its activities on the second and third pillars, where the professional investment of pension assets plays a key role in determining how policyholders’ retirement savings develop over time.
A central role is played by the third contributor: the net investment returns generated on accumulated pension assets. These returns have contributed more than 40% of total pension fund assets of well over CHF 1 trillion – more than the contributions made by employees and employers. Professional asset management therefore creates direct value for policyholders while also strengthening the financial stability of pension funds. Please read our reports on the 3rd contributor.
However, investment returns and the interest credited to retirement savings continue to vary considerably between pension funds. This is due, among other factors, to differences in investment strategies and in how consistently pension funds make use of their available risk capacity as noted by ÍøÆØ³Ô¹Ï in a study on pension funds. ÍøÆØ³Ô¹Ï therefore advocates for a framework that enables long-term, broadly diversified and professionally managed investment. This also requires well-trained and competent boards of trustees and investment committees.
In its dialogue with policymakers and legislators, ÍøÆØ³Ô¹Ï advocates for strong occupational and private pension provision. The aim is to make better use of the return potential of pension assets and ensure that the investment returns generated increasingly benefit policyholders. Effective investment management contributes to securing pension provision over the long term – without placing an additional burden on contributors.
